Miscellaneous Tour Photos

We knew all was well when we found this in Seattle:

How did they get a hold of my dirty Voodoo Donuts?

SnoCone is a very bad influence.

Alderaan & Keebler snuggle by the famous sea lions at San Francisco's Pier 39.

Okay, maybe six to a room was a bit much, but we saved money!

Piff! Proposing to Dobby too??

Ah, so that's where our tour money went...

Chilling in Orinda

What's Keebler doing in this shot?

Keebler and Chutney at a fancy hotel in Vegas.

New guy wilderness survival in Orinda.

Dinner in Orinda.

Give it up, Goiter.

Frank and Doppel on the bus. Frank has new socks.

On a UTS bus from Charlottesville to BWI. Sure, they're happy now...

Singing in Seattle

Once again, SnoCone is a very bad influence.

The end...

The bus ride from Las Vegas to Long Beach was the quietest I've ever experienced. I wonder why they were all so tired? :-)

My last blog post was made just after we arrived at our hotel near Long Beach; we had to leave soon for the choral festival we were singing in that evening. Well, the weather was finally warm (first time on the trip!), and I'm not exactly sure how they found the time, but some of the guys managed to take a quick dip in the hotel hot tub.

Then off we went to Cal State Long Beach, where we were greeted by crowds of high school and college choral singers waiting in line at various food trucks brought in for dinner.

The schedule was kind of crazy and not everyone got to eat before we had to warm up and do our onstage sound check. The festival was a lot of fun (at least for me!) and it was great to hear the fine work of six other college choirs. As the only men's chorus and the chorus that came from the East Coast, we were definitely the most unusual group on the program. While each chorus sang, the other conductors wrote comments about the performances for us to have after the event. Some of the comments we got were, "Beautiful resonance!" "Beautiful balance of parts." "Beautiful tone." "You are a fine ensemble." "Magical ending!" (to the Wesley) "Gorgeous! Great shape and intensity." "I am melting in this tone!" The audience, made up of eight high school groups from the afternoon and the seven college groups from the evening, really loved us. It was a great way to end the concertizing part of our tour.

Afterwards, we headed back to the hotel and tried to find someplace to eat that wasn't fast food, but everything was closed except for Tommy's Original Hamburgers. (For those not from Los Angeles, it was an iconic stand downtown for many years until the founder died and it was franchised.)

Our hotel was next door to a roller rink, a miniature golf course and a mini-amusement park. We decided to go skating, perhaps a poor decision for some of the less coordinated Club guys. (Yes Paddle, I'm talking about you.) But a good time was had by all, I think.

After skating, everyone went to bed early and a good night's sleep was had by all. Okay, so maybe that wasn't exactly how it happened, but no one died, so we're ahead of the game!

The next morning while we were loading the bus, I walked by SnoCone, who was on the phone with his mother. When he saw me he said, "You've been blogging the entire tour?!?" When I said yes, he said that his mother wondered why he wasn't in any of the pictures. So this is for SnoCone's mother.

Goiter was the last one on the bus (he decided to take a shower when we were supposed to be departing--kids today!), but the late start didn't hurt us in the end because our flight was delayed. Checking in is always fun (not), but we all made it into the airport and through security (with only a few requiring strip searches).

As you can see, everyone looks very cherry and full of pep. I thought that singing a song would help, and after overpowering the naysayers, we sang a rousing chorus of 10K and the Good Old Song. TSA agents left their posts to listen, the gate agent thanked us over the PA and asked for another selection, and all the people in the waiting area cheered and applauded.

The view from the plane was spectacular, with clear skies and great sights to see (the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Park Observatory, the Grand Canyon, etc.) Some guys on the plane chose to sleep, and others chose to read, study or talk non-stop for five hours. You'd think they'd've been all tuckered out by then...

After claiming our bags, the guys loaded up a UVa bus that came to meet us and had another several hours to go before arriving back in Charlottesville after 1 a.m. But they have today off, and school doesn't start back up until tomorrow. Enjoy your break! :-) And congratulations on a fun and successful tour!

Vegas, baby!

Well, it's the morning after our concert in Las Vegas, and I'm eagerly anticipating seeing who actually makes it to the bus on time for our trip back to Southern California. :-) Last night we sang with the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Varsity Men's Glee Club at the lovely Green Valley Presbyterian Church in the Vegas suburbs. The UNLVVMGC is a town-gown ensemble (mostly gown) that sings a wide variety of music and distinguishes themselves by running on and off stage while wildly shouting. It was kind of cool, but I don't know if Club guys have the energy to pull off something like that. They sing really well too! Here I am with UNLV conductor David Weiller and their accompanist, Barbara Buer.

We had a great audience that really enjoyed the concert. We opened, then the UNLV men sang a set, we sang again and then we closed the concert with the Biebl Ave Maria. There wasn't a dry eye in the house! The folks at the church were great, providing dinner before the concert and taking care of our every need. We really appreciate all the work by David Weiller, the conductor at UNLV, for setting up this concert! And though there were no Glee Club alumni in the audience, there were a number of UVa alumni who came out to support Club.

After the concert, the bus returned to our hotel, which is one block off the Strip. We're supposed to leave in about an hour for Long Beach, where we'll be participating in Cal State Long Beach's March Madness Invitational Choral Festival with seven other collegiate choirs (including the mixed choir from UNLV). It's not a contest, but we'll be singing with some of the best collegiate choirs in Southern California, so here's hoping the guys still have voice this evening!

More pics from Vegas will be posted as they become available. For now, you can just picture scenes from the two Hangover movies, substituting Club guys in all the major roles...

Our longest drive

We had a very long day on the bus today (400 miles from Orinda to Claremont), but another lunch stop at In-n-Out and warmer weather in the Southland helped the guys rally for a great performance in the acoustically wonderful Bridges Hall of Music at my alma mater, Pomona College.

Pomona's Music Department kindly hosted us for dinner in Frary Dining Hall, the oldest on campus. Frary has a famous fresco of Prometheus by Jose Clemente Orozco that dominates the room, though several of the guys thought the room looked a bit like the great hall at Hogwarts.

Though we had no Glee Club alumni at our concert tonight, we had a great crowd of enthusiastic locals. We sang the Biebl Ave Maria with the trio aloft in a balcony, which was a nice change. The guys also indulged me by learning Pomona's great song for men's chorus, Torchbearers, which we sang with Pomona's oldest a cappella group, the Men's Blue and White.

We're off to Las Vegas in the morning, so keep those prayers coming our way. ;-)

Amazing day in the Bay Area

Tuesday was our day in the Bay Area, and we made the most of it, with an early morning departure from Sacramento. We rolled into Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco at 11:00 a.m. and had a few hours to check out the sights before heading to the East Bay and dinner at the home of Desirée LeClerc and Charles Yeomans (old friends of the blogger). It seemed like it was no trouble at all to have 36 guys over for dinner, and everyone was grateful for the delicious meal and restful afternoon. The evening's concert was at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Orinda, the very same church where Don Loach served as organist/choirmaster when he was a grad student at UC Berkeley. Talk about a small world! The church was lovely, the audience was enthusiastic and the concert went very well. Highlights included having the Colomb sisters (Lauren and Robin) in the audience, getting to sing Torchbearers for some Pomona College alumni (friends of the blogger--long story), and getting to meet and sing for former Glee Club president Al Prichard '56. Not only was Al in the Glee Club, he was a founding member of the Virginia Gentlemen. The guys really enjoyed getting to meet him and learning a little about the "old days" at UVa. Al was impressed with the Club's new a cappella group, The Gleemen, who serenaded us with Billy Joel's Uptown Girl as part of the concert.

Wednesday features our longest drive (400 miles) and a concert at Pomona College, the blogger's alma mater. Club guys should be prepared for longer-than-usual stories about life at Pomona. I'm sure they're all looking forward to it. :-)

Sacramento

Last night was our first "solo" concert. With no collaborating choir, we were able to sing our entire program for a friendly crowd at Congregation B'nai Israel--our first tour concert in a synagogue. Massive thanks to Rick Goldberg '82, who organized the entire event for us. The acoustics were fantastic and the pre-concert spaghetti dinner was delicioso. We're loading up the bus now and heading to San Francisco for a little sightseeing before tonight's concert at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Orinda--where Don Loach was music director during his student days at Berkeley!

Voodoo Donuts Texas Challenge

So if you've ever driven across Texas, you've seen those signs about getting a giant steak for free if you can eat it all in one sitting. Well, Portland's famed Voodoo Donuts has a similar challenge: eat one giant doughnut (equal to six regular ones) in less than 80 seconds and you get the doughnut free. If you can't do it, you have to pay for it ($4.20). You also get a commemorative pin. Sounds easy, right? Well, Femur (David Chang) decided to give it a try, but, alas, he couldn't quite finish. Later on that same evening, Llama (Daniel Hine) was able to down the whole doughnut, saving $4.20 and earning a lovely new pin for his lapel. Here's a little video of Femur's noble effort.
