Amazing day in the Bay Area

Tuesday was our day in the Bay Area, and we made the most of it, with an early morning departure from Sacramento. We rolled into Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco at 11:00 a.m. and had a few hours to check out the sights before heading to the East Bay and dinner at the home of Desirée LeClerc and Charles Yeomans (old friends of the blogger). It seemed like it was no trouble at all to have 36 guys over for dinner, and everyone was grateful for the delicious meal and restful afternoon. The evening's concert was at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Orinda, the very same church where Don Loach served as organist/choirmaster when he was a grad student at UC Berkeley. Talk about a small world! The church was lovely, the audience was enthusiastic and the concert went very well. Highlights included having the Colomb sisters (Lauren and Robin) in the audience, getting to sing Torchbearers for some Pomona College alumni (friends of the blogger--long story), and getting to meet and sing for former Glee Club president Al Prichard '56. Not only was Al in the Glee Club, he was a founding member of the Virginia Gentlemen. The guys really enjoyed getting to meet him and learning a little about the "old days" at UVa. Al was impressed with the Club's new a cappella group, The Gleemen, who serenaded us with Billy Joel's Uptown Girl as part of the concert.

Wednesday features our longest drive (400 miles) and a concert at Pomona College, the blogger's alma mater. Club guys should be prepared for longer-than-usual stories about life at Pomona. I'm sure they're all looking forward to it. :-)

  1. The Glee Club's performance last night was outstanding. Many of us in the audience--including me--became instant fans. The program had a delightful variety, with something for everyone. I particularly liked the group's blend and musicality. I wish you well on the rest of your tour--thanks for visiting St. Stephen's.
